In the Riverland, the Murray River weaves past some of Australia’s most impressive river scenery; cinematic backdrops of limestone cliffs, graceful river red gums and Mallee country, as well as lush vineyards, orchards and citrus groves.
The Riverland is less than 2 hours drive from Adelaide and follows the river to where it forms the border between, SA, NSW and Victoria.
Sunshine, water and great soil have made the Riverland the engine-room of Australian wine, crushing over half of South Australia’s wine grapes (a third nationally). The Riverland abundance doesn’t only spring from the vines. The mesmerising rows or orchards supply up to 90% of South Australia’s stone fruits, citrus and almonds.
The Riverland is renowned for producing olives, almonds and pistachios, native produce, avocadoes, vegetables - varied but notably potatoes and onions, citrus, stone fruit, pork and lamb.
Premium value added products are derived from the region’s fruits including olive oil, glaced fruits (The Riverland is the only producer of glaced fruits in Australia), dried fruit, fruits in brandy, sherry and port, flavoured nuts, condiments including jams, relish, pickles and chutneys and fruit filled chocolates to mention a few.
Many roadside stalls line the highways throughout the Riverland with fresh season fruit and the 22 wine and produce outlets throughout the area stock the regions famous dried fruits and other local produce.
It’s no surprise that good dining follows good wine and local produce. In the Riverland dining outside by the River or the many local restaurants, pubs and clubs are what completes this great river experience.
The development of irrigations schemes in the late 1880’s by the Canadian born Chaffey brothers turned this countryside into Australia’s fruit bowl.
