Feast on Fleurieu’s food

The Fleurieu Peninsula is a grower’s paradise! Rows of vines are testament to the world renowned reputation of the wine - but in between the yards you will find a strong farming tradition. Livestock and dairy are nestled in between almond and olive groves the result is production of jams, relishes, olive oils, dips, milk and rich cheeses.

The milky way

Fleurieu Milk Company productsOld fashioned taste is the order of the day at the Fleurieu Milk Company.

Remember when milk tasted like milk? Geoff Hutchinson from Fleurieu Milk Company does, and it’s a taste he wants to share with Australia.

The Fleurieu Milk Company at Myponga was established in 2006 when three local dairy farming families joined together to produce a Jersey A2 range.

A2 milk is the most pure form of milk. Cows are tested for the A2 gene which contains A2 beta casein protein. Epidemiological studies suggest populations consuming milk rich in this protein suffer less from heart disease and childhood diabetes.

Fleurieu Milk Company was the first producer of A2 milk exclusively from Jersey dairy cows in SA.

“Our greatest resource is our quality dairy herd,” co-founder Geoff Hutchinson explains. “We use a Holstein Friesian herd for our main milk range and Jerseys for our premium A2 range.” By producing A2 milk exclusively from Jersey cows, Geoff says Fleurieu Milk Company offers wholesalers, retailers and consumers a clearly defined point of difference.

“We believe this point of difference adds value to the dairy category as consumers become increasingly knowledgeable about the health benefits of A2 milk.”

“We don’t add anything to our milks and cream, we keep them as close as possible to the natural product – straight from the cow,” Geoff said.

The Fleurieu Milk Company produces a range of milk products including full cream, low fat, unhomogenised, genetically modified-free and permeate free plain milks and cream. An iced coffee product, which matches creamy premium full cream milk with the rich flavours of Monjava Coffee, was introduced mid last year, and a chocolate milk is expected to be released shortly.

Fleurieu Milk Company products are sold in Foodland, IGA, fresh food stores, cafes, farmer’s markets and fruit marts.

Got the goods!

The Goods productsThe rich, aromatic flavours of South East Asia and the Mediterranean are the inspiration for The Goods’ range of dips and condiments.

As a cook aboard luxury yachts sailing through the Mediterranean, Caribbean and South-East Asia, Liz Pitman was surrounded by the rich and aromatic tastes and smells of exotic dips, pestos, sauces and condiments.

When she returned to Adelaide after a decade abroad, she set about creating her own.

The result is the successful The Goods Fleurieu Fine Foods range of dips, pestos, sauces and condiments.

The collection includes a moroccan chermoula dip, a fetta chilli dip, thai lemongrass pate, mango and port chutney, spicy roasted pumpkin dip, asian pesto and a seriously saucy smoky BBQ sauce.

“I wanted to create flavours and products that were fresh and clean and as delicious as possible,” Liz said.

“I’m always on the lookout for new flavours. I recently introduced two new dips to the range - a jalapeno and artichoke dip which is vegetarian, dairy based and has just a nice little bite at the back and roasted pepper and cashew salsa which has very fresh and tasty flavors as well as being vegan,” Liz said.

Liz started The Goods six years ago, and the business is going from strength to strength. Sales figures for December 2008 were up 45% from the previous year and product lines are now numbered at 17 – and growing.

Currently Liz is concentrating on more of the same, producing quality dips from her production kitchen located behind Port Elliot.

“I’m also looking to build new markets in Melbourne and Sydney,” Liz said.

The Goods products are stocked in gourmet food stores and major Foodlands across Adelaide.
