The South Australian beef industry is poised to take advantage of of a range of opportunities that could grow the industry value to $1.2 billion by the year 2015.

This document details strategic directions that will enable such growth. The industry in 2015 will have the following characteristics.

A focus on end users of beef products

  • Providing valued end user solutions by ensuring integrity and quality of all products.
  • Increased demand for SA products.
  • 30% increse in exports.
  • 5% increase in domestic consumption is SA.

Implementing responsible production systems on a reduced land base

  • SA will be known as the 'Finishing state', which is achieved by increasing pasture utilisation, implementing supplementary feeding systems, encouraging growth in the feedlot sector and increasing carcase yield.
  • Production systems are optimising the balance between profit and environmental concerns.
  • 15% increase in production on a 10% reduced land base (28% efficiency gain).

Efficient processing and distribution systems

  • The value of the carcase and co-products is optimised.
  • Infrastructure and transport enabling growth of the processing sector.
  • 40% increase in total processing.

Strong industry partnerships, committed people and a positive image

  • SA has a culture of innovation and adoption.
  • People are attracted and committed to the industry.
  • Positive relationships between industry and government.
  • Knowledge and skilled workforce.

Integration throughout the value chain

  • Producers accessing the carcase feedback to fine tune production systems.
  • All sectors in the value chain have intimate knowledge of the expectations of their end users.
  • Close relationships between producers and processors.
