PIRSA Regional Food ScoreCards estimate the value of the agriculture, food and beverage industries to the State’s regions at each stage along the value chain, from production through consumption.1
The ‘headline’ ScoreCard measure, Gross Food Revenue, is an estimate of the contribution made to the region’s economy by the food and beverage industries at the point of final export or local consumption.
Regional ScoreCard information assists in developing an understanding of the role the food industry plays in our regional economies. The information can also help identify existing and emerging regional production capabilities and opportunities.
Gross Food Revenue takes into account the value of farm production, food value-adding, processing, packing and distribution, as well as food service and retail sales. The graph presents the proportions of regional gross food revenue (excluding wine) attributable to local consumption and exports out of the region.
Calculating Gross Food Revenue for each region requires an assessment of the size and value of each industry at both the production and processing levels. The following charts present estimates of each industry’s contribution to production and processing values in the Limestone Coast Region.
Production value is a measure of the value of a commodity at the local level of production (i.e, farm gate). This value is calculated by multiplying the volume of production by the price received, which represents the value of production to the producer.
This measure can also be used as a benchmark for estimating the additions to the price of a product (i.e., additions to its value) as it moves through the value chain from production to consumption.
The graph below presents the estimated value of food and beverages processed in the Limestone Coast Region, that is, the value of product at its highest level of processing or finishing. Processed or finished foods can include products that are both minimally and highly processed. The value is represented by their wholesale price into the region’s retail or export markets.
Regional Food ScoreCard information is based on PIRSA and Food South Australia ScoreCard estimates, which are based, in turn, on ABS, ABARE and other available data.
The next set of Regional ScoreCards, to be produced in 2007-08, is expected to establish a new baseline, based on 2006 ABS Census and Agricultural Census data and aligned with the South Australian regional boundaries recently established by the SA Government Reform Commission.
1 Regional ScoreCard data is aligned to South Australia’s Regional Development Board boundaries.
2 Although Gross Food Revenue generally excludes wine, a similar methodology is used to estimate the revenue generated by the wine industry in each region. The estimated Gross Food Revenue in the Limestone Coast region in 2005-06, including wine, was $1,320 million.
