Getting the technology into food

Two food technologists have joined PIRSA/SARDI, a joint initiative of the Innovation and New Product Development program of the South Australian Food Plan 2007-2010.

Andrew Barber has been appointed Principal Food Technologist/Principal Scientist, while Stewart Eddie is the Senior Food Technologist/Senior Research Officer, both with Innovative Food and Plants.

Andrew and Stewart’s role is to work with the Industry Development Officers to provide a key interface and facilitation role between the finished food sector and technical, research and development resources available to assist the industry - assisting in food innovation, product development and technical issues.

Andrew is a Chemical Engineer with postgraduate qualifications in biotechnology, working in the fields of enzymology and fermentation technology.

He has most recently been employed as Technical Manager at Burra Foods. Andrew’s role there involved the development of new products for markets including Japan, South East Asia, the EU and the USA.

Stewart Eddie is a Food Technologist who has both hands-on and management experience in all aspects of developing and industrialising new products.

He was most recently employed at Nestlé Chilled Dairy as Product Development Manager developing new products for key brands such as Nestlé Diet and Nestlé All Natural.

Stewart said he was excited by the challenges ahead.

Richard Heyneman, Director, Food and Business Innovation, PIRSA, said the food technologist roles were a boost for the industry.
