Two weeks before the official opening of the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market, Australian film maker Lauren Drewery decided to capture it on film.
The result is a fascinating DVD that traces the history of farmers markets in South Australia and offers a do it yourself guide for communities to create a successful farmers market of their own.
“The DVD is a way to get the message out there to local councils, community groups, producers, funding bodies and consumers that a community owned and operated not for profit farmers market model is worth looking at because it is sustainable,” Farmers Market stalwart, project manager of the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market and co-producer of The Making of a Sustainable Farmers Market, Zannie Flanagan, said.
The DVD, funded by the South Australian Food Centre and SA Health, contains a wealth of information, including a Farmers Market ‘toolkit’, market research and interviews with Farmers Market participants.
Almond grower Jude McBain, who sells her Blue Cottage Almonds at the original Willunga Farmers Market, said before the advent of the farmers market in her town “you could fire a cannon down the main street and not hit anyone.”
Today, she said main street businesses were thriving and her entire almond crop was sold each season.
“From the day [the Willunga Farmers Market] opened we knew we were on a winner.”
Zannie said the DVD was “selling like hotcakes” to councils and community groups across the nation.
“We’re also making inroads to England with the DVD,” she said.
The Making of a Sustainable Farmers Market DVD is priced at $20 and is available from
the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market.
