"The primary reason for using a distributor is to allow food producers to focus on what they do best: manufacturing and developing new product" says Food Nation Managing Director, Rachel Gemmell.

Rachel established FoodNation nearly four years ago and today the company represents 40 clients boasting nearly 600 lines.

"We distribute premium gourmet products into independent supermarkets, high-end specialty retailers, gourmet stores, cafes, restaurants, bottle shops, florists and gift hamper companies."

Product lines include cheese, dip, ice cream, oil, vinegar, jam, seafood, tea, certified organic and gluten free food.

"The two criteria we look florin a product are 'world class' and/or sought after," Rachel said.

"We don't take products that are slow sellers and we constantly assess our range."

Rachel said a key to FoodNation's success on behalf of its food producer clients was its sales approach:

"We really do go after every single sale. If we have exclusive distribution we feel the responsibility to chase every sale, no matter how big or small."

FGM Distributors is another key player in the South Australian food distribution industry.

"Our product list runs to 28 pages, which gives an indication of how many products we distribute," Managing Director Barry Hale said.

FGM prides itself on going out of its way to provide the hospitality industry with the different and unusual - from seafood and game to gourmet lines such as native fruit sauces.

"We look for products that are a bit out of the ordinary, a bit different. We don't favour the run-of-the-mill supermarket products," Barry said.

FGM provides a wide range of product lines from frozen to dry goods, cakes to antipasto and a full game line.

Barry said food producers could benefit from the specialized expertise provided by distribution agents. Food producers can concentrate on producing, leaving the distributor to [take their products out into]the marketplace.
