South Australia’s clean, pristine seafood regions get the thumbs up from France’s leading chefs.
French chefs, journalists and photographers toured South Australia’s seafood regions as part of a Euro Toques culinary tour in late 2009.
And what impressed them most? South Australia’s clear, pristine waters and premium quality seafood with the chefs taking in oysters, mussels, kingfish and tuna in Port Lincoln, and lobster, marron and King George whiting on Kangaroo Island.
Leading chefs Henri Charvet, President of Euro-Toques France and Michelin star chef, and Jean Pierre Biffi, International President of Escoffier World Chef’s Association, visit which promotes South Australian seafood products in France under an agreement with PIRSA.
Glen Ingham, PIRSA Seafood Industry Development Manager who co-hosted the tour said that at all locations they viewed production and processing and commented on our clean green environment.
“This is the first time Euro Toques has promoted products sourced from outside of Europe, so it was a very valuable initiative,” Glen said.
“The visit enabled the chefs to see behind-the-scenes of our seafood export businesses as well as other food businesses that may wish to export to Europe.
“The tour culminated in attending the Premier’s Food Awards presentation gala dinner, of which they were highly impressed.”
Euro-Toques International is a network of over 4,000 European chefs, including 400 from France, whose quest is to protect and pass onto future generations a respect for culinary traditions and best principles of cooking, and to work with and lobby on behalf of quality producers to ensure that foods with real flavour, texture and taste are available now and in the future for our chefs, customers and children.
Since the tour South Australian yellow tail kingfish has been served at the annual Euro Toques conference and a marked growth in sales of the fish has occurred to Europe. A DVD of the tour made for French TV is being purchased by PIRSA Market Development and a contingent from Euro Toques is expected to tour again in 2011.
