Healthy ScoreCard for food

South Australia’s food industry is looking good, according to the latest ScoreCard results.

Despite the drought and declining global demand in key sectors, the state’s food industry has shown remarkable resilience with significant increases in key indicators over the last 12 months.
The data from the annual Primary Industries and Resources SA Food ScoreCard shows Gross Food Revenue in 2008/09 increased 8% to $12.4 billion.

The result shows the strength of the food industry and its importance to South Australia.

In the past year gross food revenue, finished food and the value of overseas exports have all grown significantly.

Overseas exports of South Australian food have grown 18% over the past year to be at a seven year high and the second highest value on record.

Over the last decade finished food export growth has been driven by exceptional growth in meat products, seafood, as well as pasta, beer and other grain products.

The ScoreCard shows finished food has grown steadily over the year with finished food overseas exports growing by 10% to reach a record level of $1.3 billion.

Employment in the food industry increased both at the production end and the finished food end.

The food industry now employs 146,000 people - an increase of 5% from the previous year.

Declines are evident in the primary production end of the food industry. Farm gate values are down 5% to $3.2 billion largely due to declining world grain prices and poor seasonal conditions.
