AgriExchange beating the odds

Against the odds created by the drought, AgriExchange is going from strength to strength.

It’s been a tough couple of years for the horticulture industry.

One of the hardest-hit regions is the Riverland - one of South Australia’s most drought-affected and water-reliant regional communities.

However, from challenge often comes renewed determination and an opportunity to ‘think outside the square’ to move onwards and upwards.

Facing the most severe water restrictions in history, Renmark’s AgriExchange – one of the largest producers and packers of citrus and table gapes in Australia - has taken a very pro-active stance in supporting its staff, customers and the wider community overcome the challenges created by the drought.

For example, AgriExchange has:

  • Pioneered a ground-breaking drought management strategy for efficient water management
  • Developed new models of training and skill development programs in conjunction with service providers and allies in the community
  • Supported on-site demonstration projects and agribusiness initiatives in educational institutions
  • Upskilled socially disadvantaged and disengaged members of the community.

AgriExchange's efforts were recognised at The Tenth Annual South Australian Premier’s Food Awards, when the company was awarded the Workforce Development Award.

The company’s motto: ‘we hire for character and train for skill’ has no doubt been integral to its success.

With more than 300 staff and 700 casuals in the peak packing season, AgriExchange invests a substantial amount of expertise, time and resources to training and development. This ensures all staff have maximum access to tailored training programs – which in turn adds value to their professional and personal well being.

The value of AgriExchange's investment into its people is regularly reinforced through an exceptionally low turnover rate of permanent employees and high return rate of casual staff.
