Spirited win for Kangaroo Island Spirits

Kangaroo Island Spirits (Kis), SA’s only boutique distillery has gained two awards at this year’s International Wine and Spirits Competition in London. Competing against hundreds of entries from around the world in a blind tasting, KiS achieved medals for both their Anisette liqueur and Wild Gin. The Kis Anisette Liqueur won a silver medal and is a sambuca style aniseed liqueur flavoured predominately from Kangaroo Island wild fennel, with star anise and a hint of vanilla. The second medal, a bronze was awarded for the Kis Wild Gin which is produced in small batches using fresh botanicals including a Kangaroo Island native 'juniper like berry’ - myoporum insulare. The seasonality and small batch distilling using Australia’s only basket still process adds to this unique product. These awards coincide with the owners heading to Europe next week. The month long trip, aided by a grant from the Food and Beverage Development Fund SA will focus on small distilleries in Italy, Germany, Sweden, and the UK. Kis Products are available from their cellar door at Cygnet River or online.

The constant change in consumer trends can quickly date specific information. Access to managing growth key

As South Australian food businesses gear up for continued growth in the coming years, access to business critical information is becoming an increasing priority. According to local software solution provider, Graycorp, the generally high volume, low margin nature of food businesses – coupled with their inherent complexity and time critical nature – makes it imperative for management to have a complete understanding of every aspect of the business. Graycorp has been working closely with food industry clients for several years and has an extensive client base of local food manufacturers and distributors. CIBO, Festival City Wines & Spirits and Nocelle Foods have all recently appointed Graycorp to manage their software needs. Nocelle Foods – one of Australia’s largest manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and importers of quality nuts, dried fruits, snack and confectionery products – appointed Graycorp to install a new business-wide software system in advance of an expected doubling in production and turnover in the next few years. “We considered several software suppliers and the fact that Graycorp’s system was so tailored to the food industry and to food manufacturing was a key factor in our choice,” Nocelle Foods CEO, Thomas Cheung, said. “This new system will be integral to managing and supporting our growth in the coming years.”

Innova reveals sustainable packaging and material solutions

The Innova review for September, ‘Packaging Solutions & Material Highlights’, offers a selection of slides from a much larger presentation on the topic. It reveals that businesses need to help consumers understand sustainability to assist their purchasing decisions. Currently, sustainability efforts are most apparent to consumers in the form of packaging materials used for foods and beverages. Typical terms used by manufacturers to claim sustainability are; eco-friendly, biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, carbon footprint and fair-trade. Global product launches with sustainability claims have risen dramatically in the last five years with new products highlighting themselves as greener, more eco-friendly or derived from sustainable resources. Some of these packaging solutions and materials include; biodegradable film NatureFlex NM, same servings in smaller boxes, renewable plant-based packaging, unique storage, locking in freshness, packed ready and biodegradable plastic. Innova Market Insights reviews and news features are provided free on the SA Food Centre website and highlight the latest international trends, data and product insights on food and beverage categories.

Fruchocs ‘giant’ Success

Robern Menz recent launch of Giant FruChocs and repackaging of the regular products saw the 102 year old company undertake its biggest marketing campaign in 17 years – and the results are....‘GIANT’...7.5 million FruChocs in one month. Giant FruChocs were trialled for a while in factory outlets at Glynde and McLaren Vale and due to popular demand, the decision was made to release Giant FruChocs to the broader retail sector targeting a younger demographic with a more risqué campaign. It was positioned as the ‘hero’ of the re-launch. Robern Menz marketing campaign for the new product and rebrand of original FruChocs involved a mix of traditional, non-traditional and social media activity. They focussed on building their Facebook presence to over 14,000 fans with a high level of interaction. Another aspect of the campaign involved a T-shirt design competition which received 80 entries. And it all worked with Robern Menz reporting July breaking all FruChoc records - sales for the month were 22% bigger than any month previously. Robern Menz, will next be at the Royal Adelaide show in September selling six showbags.
