Your Awards are open

Each year you hear about the SA Premier’s Food Industry Awards - some of you enter, some of you procrastinate and others don’t give it a second thought. Maybe your business has been around for a long time, maybe it has been around for a short time – however you would all agree that this is your industry, your future and your Awards – it’s all-consuming. The 13th Annual Awards have undergone a few changes in 2010 based on the newly released South Australian Food Strategy which has a vision over the next five years of creating food which is beyond the expectations of all consumers. The Awards title has been amended to include the word ‘industry’ which means that the Awards are no longer just for finished food businesses but for all food related businesses working along the food value chain – that’s producers, growers, distributors, retailers, associations and more. The categories have a stronger focus towards industry and there are three new Awards: Visionary Leader – now recognising Young and Industry; Growing Small Business and Understanding Consumers. It is time to work together for your Awards. Entries are open until 23 July 2010 with the winners announced at the Awards presentation gala dinner on Friday 5 November at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Visit www.safoodawards.com.au for all the category details, to register and apply online.

Wheat - SA’s largest food export product

South Australian food exports have faced a challenging year according to the latest bi-monthly export bulletin produced by PIRSA’s Market Intelligence Unit. The bulletin highlights that the global financial crisis has seen a substantial decline in demand for many traded goods and prices for many products, including food, dropped from record highs. Field crops for South Australia are also highlighted in the bulletin, showing that a large proportion of grain production is sold in export markets along with a range of grain based processed products including beer, malt and pasta. Wheat is the State’s single largest food export product, worth $735 million in 2008/09. The largest markets for SA wheat are in the Middle East, where the majority is ultimately consumed in the form of flat bread. Other markets include South East Asian countries and Pacific countries.
