The Innova review for June is ‘Insight into Private Label’ and shows mixed responses to the economic downturn regarding private label such as a rising interest in cheaper and own brand alternatives, but that the number of new product launches globally has risen. The opportunities in private label products include healthy innovation choices, increases in ethical claims, sustainable choices, cleaner labelling, addressing allergies, unique flavours, differing through premium and following food service trends. Innova Market Insights is providing free access to a series of reviews and news features highlighting the latest international trends, data and product insights on food and beverage categories of relevance for the South Australian food industry through a partnership with the newly developed SA Food Centre website.

Students completing the Grow Smart program visited the SA Food Centre in May for an interactive session with Food Technologist Robyn Hargrave, Packaging Technologist Emma Langlois and university students working on food related projects. The visit led by Peter Haines included a tour of the facilities at the Centre as well as a range of hands-on experiments in the laboratory. Topics covered included fortification of cereals, the use of emulsions, basic lab testing, sensory analysis and a blind chocolate tasting in the sensory panel room. The students were shown the every day applications of food science and technology and given the opportunity to discuss career options as well as ask questions about food processing. The Grow Smart program aims to encourage secondary school students to consider study in a field of science and the week long activities provide a chance for the students to learn more about the practical applications of science in agriculture and related fields.
