South Australian businesswoman, Maggie Beer has been named Senior Australian of the Year at the recent Australia Day celebrations. Based in South Australia's Barossa Valley, Maggie is a food producer, self-taught cook, restaurateur, food author and celebrity television host. Her Barossa business produces a range of specialty gourmet foods including Pheasant Farm Pate, Quince Paste and Verjuice and she has been instrumental in promoting South Australian produce both in Australia and overseas.

Congratulations to Dr Don Plowman, deputy Chief Executive PIRSA on receiving an Australian Public Service Medal for outstanding service in the area of sustainable agricultural development. The Public Service Medal recognises those people who have consistently performed demanding jobs to the highest standards and have made a major contribution to the Australian community. Throughout Don's 30 year public service career he has consistently shown outstanding leadership and excellence in policy development and innovation and has promoted efficiency and productivity within his teams. Don has personally played a key role in a number of critical programs with major impacts on the sustainability of the State’s agricultural industries, namely the State Rural Sustainability Task Force and the Lower Eyre Peninsula Bushfire response. Don will receive his medal at an official investiture at Government House later this year.

South Australian food, wine and tourism will be viewed by an audience of around 1.5 million when Hong Kong’s leading TV station, TVB (Television Broadcast Limited) goes to air later this year with their Australian Food & Travelogue Program. The program will also be seen in China, Taiwan, SE Asia, Canada, USA and New Zealand. Sponsored by the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC), Primary Industries & Resources SA (PIRSA) and Department of Trade & Economic Development (DTED) filming starts next month and their crew will spend 12 action packed days filming segments in Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills, Limestone Coast, Kangaroo Island, Barossa Valley and Port Lincoln.

Simon Bryant, Hilton Adelaide’s Executive Chef and creator of the ‘Seriously South Australian’ menu has announced that he will be leaving the Hilton Adelaide later this month after seven years, serving an average of 800 meals a day. His passion for South Australian produce was evident as he showcased the true essence of South Australia. In a joint venture with the best providores, growers and suppliers of the region, Simon and his team sourced the very best and with a respectful cooking style the flavours were presented in a simple, fresh and unpretentious way. Simon’s role will be filled by local talent, Dennis Leslie who, with his own flair and creativity will continue promoting the State’s finest produce.
