It's the one veggie children won't turn down and it looks set to stay that way with SARDI scientists making major strides in diagnosing potato diseases with the development of new DNA tests. The tests identify and measure major disease threats on potato seed and in the soil before crops are sown. During Spring, regional grower groups will help scientists gauge disease risk so that growers will in future years have the opportunity to assess the threat of disease before sowing crops so they can take steps to maintain quality and yields. Damage and loss caused by potato diseases represent one of the most significant challenges facing the potato processing industry costing the Australian industry more than $80 million. The research to support tests for powdery scab, common scab, Rhizoctonia and a damaging strain of root knot have been supported by Phase 1 of the Australian Potato Research Program, through Horticulture Australia Limited using the processing potato levy, additional funding from international research organisations, the federal government and in-kind support by the SA, Victorian and Tasmanian Governments.
