New Agrifood strategy in the works

A new Agrifood Strategy is currently in development to replace the current South Australian Food Plan 2007-2010, which expires in June 2010. A value chain approach, placing consumers at the forefront and providing a platform for across government and industry collaboration are the key considerations of the new strategy. The strategy is being developed under the guidance of the Premiers Food Council Executive. Simon Gierke from PIRSA is heading up development of the new strategy and is keen to talk to anyone that wants to have input into the strategy. Various papers and podcasts are available at www.safoodcentre.com.au/premiers_food_council/food_forum/may_09

Malnutrition treatment transformed into tasty cookie

South Australia is using its food expertise to develop a simple aid for our national health system to treat Australians suffering from poor nutrition levels. The SA Food Centre has taken a gooey paste used widely by the UN to combat malnutrition and transformed it into a tasty, medicine cookie. SARDI food technologists have used sensory evaluation techniques to develop the cookie recipe with the assistance of exchange students from France, who are being hosted by the SA Food Centre for industry placement projects. The cookie recipe is the brainchild of SARDI food technologist, Stewart Eddie, TAFE SA baker Fee Lee and exchange student, Jessica Stephani. It utilises an existing malnutrition paste that is transformed into a tasty, medicine cookie. The baked biscuit layers provide a boost of energy and the icing-type mixture inside is packed with vitamins and minerals. The new cookie recipe will be finalised in the next few months and made available to health professionals. It was also recently featured on Channel 7 News.

Seven changes to food buying habits

How has the economic downturn affected the simple family dinner? A recent survey of over 5,000 Australian families has found one third of Australian families have changed their dinner habits due to the economy. It found 97 per cent consider it important to sit down together as a family to eat their nightly meal. However 46% are now eating more home cooked meals now than a year ago, with the primary reasons being to either save money (65%) or to ensure they eat healthily (62%). The research identified seven key changes to food purchasing habits.

  1. More bulk buying and bulk cooking.
  2. Buying home brands over name brands.
  3. Cutting back on meat or buying lesser cuts of meat.
  4. Using vegetables as a money saving substitute to meat.
  5. Planning purchases to avoid impulse buys.
  6. Greater price awareness and price comparison.
  7. Eating less takeaway.

Better labelling for buying Australian

South Australians wanting to buy local Australian produce should be finding it easier thanks to a concerted campaign by SA Health – enforcing the State Government’s Country of Origin labelling laws for packaged and unpackaged food. An inspection of 284 food businesses checked in the second half of 2008, showed half did not meet Country of Origin labelling requirements, but that almost 90% of the 117 revisited in 2009 are now compliant. Food businesses can help consumers who want to make a conscientious choice to buy Australian produced or manufactured foods, supporting local producers and in turn jobs and the economy. Packaged and unpackaged food for retail sale must identify whether the contents are imported or a mix of local and imported produce.

Website cultivates investment in South East horticulture

The Limestone Coast Regional Development Board and PIRSA have developed a one stop shop website, designed to encourage investment in the region’s horticulture industry. The website highlights the key strengths for horticulture in the Limestone Coast region - reliable rainfall, a plentiful supply of underground water and some of the state’s best horticultural soil, as well as established infrastructure and industrial diversity. It also includes maps of the region including soil associations, water availability and climatic conditions, as well as and information regarding labour costs, the economy, communication and lifestyle. The website directs potential investors to all the relevant industry bodies, organisations and government departments for further assistance. The Limestone Coast is already home to multi-million-dollar enterprises generating a wide variety of horticultural produce that supplies domestic and international markets including apples, lemons, cherries, potatoes, carrots, onions, olives and lettuce.
