The South Australian Food Plan is supported by a number of food sector strategic plans which address issues along the food value chain from paddock to plate.
The sector strategic plans collectively contribute to the targets defined in the SA Food Plan, which delivers the food industry component that contributes to the achievements of the South Australian Strategic Plan.
The SA Food Centre plays an important role in the development and implementation of strategic sector plans in partnership with Govenment of South Australia agencies and industry, assisting in ensuring that the plans are comprehensive and address the issues along the food value chain.
Industry Sector Plans describe the strategies that industry sectors have identified to enable them to address their major challenges and opportunities in order to grow. The plans are owned by industry groups, but have developed cooperatively between government and industry.
The SA apple, pear and cherry industries will be competitive, efficient and innovative, environmentally sound and based on the most up to date technologies and business structures, working collaboratively to contribute to the regional and SA economy. The Apple, Pear and Cherry Strategic Plan 2006-2011 is the result of consultation with members, undertaken by PIRSA, the Apple and Pear Growers Association SA and the Cherry Growers Association of SA.
The Strategic Plan for the South Australian Citrus Industry (PDF 744.4 KB) develops and implements strategies to boost the State’s citrus production, processing and marketing industry, adding to the regional industry’s competitive advantage, resulting in a more sustainable supply chain and contributing to a better industry bottom line.

The Honeybee Industry Strategic Plan 2006-2010 is aiming for the South Australian Beekeeping Industry to be coordinated, market driven, commercially and environmentally sustainable for its participants supplying products/services to an informed community.
The South Australian Olive Industry Strategic Plan is aiming for South Australia to be acknowledged as a sustainable producer of high quality and price competitive Australian olive products in both domestic and export markets. The plan represents the culmination of an industry consultation process undertaken by PIRSA, in close consultation with Olives South Australia.

The South Australian Sheep Industry 10-year Strategic Plan provides a clear, common vision for the SA sheep industry’s capacity and potential. The strategic plan was developed in 2004 following consultation with a range of stakeholders both within the state and nationally.
The plan outlines four strategies for future industry development; growing the value, building capacity, enhancing industry integration and improving the relationship with the community.

The Strategic Plan for the South Australian Vegetable Industry 2004 – 2009 sets a vision for the South Australian vegetable industry is to be respected for its innovation, vibrancy, competitiveness, profitability, sustainability and integrity.
Through the SA Food Centre, PIRSA works closely with industry-specific groups, to focus on developing the sectors, in line with targets set by the SA Food Plan.
PIRSA Grains Industry Group working on policies, legislation, regulatory frameworks and programs to promote an optimal business, natural and social environment within which primary industries can prosper.
PIRSA Livestock works across the livestock sector value chains to address issues critical to the future growth of each industry. Industry Development Boards with representatives from along the value chain provide strategic advice to PIRSA about their industries. In turn PIRSA works with other government agencies to address regulatory and policy matters such as environmental protection, animal welfare, drought mitigation, workforce development, infrastructure access and planning approval.
PIRSA Seafood is a key partner with industry in the development of a sustainable seafood industry which is self-reliant, market driven, internationally competitive, and environmentally and socially responsible.
PIRSA Horticulture facilitates horticulture industry development. PIRSA maintains close links with the citrus industry through the SA Citrus Industry Development Board. Key areas of focus are workforce availability and skills, increased collaboration and cooperation in the value chains, resource access and infrastructure, improving the viability of industry data and statistics and export development.
PIRSA Biosecurity programs work for the protection of people, animals, horticultural industries and ecological systems against disease and other biological threats. Involvement with biosecurity is essential to protect South Australia's favourable pest and disease status from the increased risk of exotic pest, disease and weed incursions.
