Interstate markets

Looking at expanding your market? Entering interstate markets could open the door to new buyers and increase your sales.

Interstate markets have been identified as the fastest growing marketplaces for South Australian products. The state currently ( 2008/09) has net sales of food commodities and products interstate to the value of $1.630.8 billion.

Developing your interstate markets can be a useful stepping stone to international exports. It will help you build capability and capacity in a familiar environment, before you take the big step overseas.

Flavour SA, in partnership with the SA Food Centre, enables South Australian food businesses to participate in interstate platforms and promotions, such as Fine Food, to create awareness of South Australia’s food and beverage products and to stimulate sales.

Through this partnership South Australian food businesses can participate in inbound buyers programs, in market promotions and market awareness visits.

Understanding consumers is a key factor in deciding to enter new markets.

You need to:

  • Understand the trends in the market
  • Identify possible markets
  • Research these markets
  • Understand your chosen markets
Entering a new market can be challenging. You should first identify a gap in that market.

You need to select a market that is:
  • accessible
  • large enough to make a profit
  • reasonably homogeneous
Visit Market Intelligence for more information about identifying markets and research.

The latest SA Food ScoreCard 2008-09 also contains information about the increased value in interstate markets.
